Having lost his parents to the plague and his brother Reks to treachery and war, Vaan is now a street urchin of Rabanastre. He makes his living as Migelo's assistant, running various errands for him, while at the same time pickpocketing from Archadian soldiers, claiming to be taking back what is rightfully Dalmasca's.

Though sometimes a bit naive and wreckless, Vaan is upbeat and energetic, and considered the leader among his group of friends. He dreams of someday becoming a Sky Pirate and commanding his own Airship, and often trains to meet this goal by killing rats in the sewers of Rabanastre. This causes Old Dalan to give him the nickname of "Vaan Ratsbane."

During the beginning of the game, Vaan is still resentful of his brother's death at the supposed hands of Basch. However, this quickly changes as he and the party learn the truth, and he eventually decides to trust Basch, stating "My brother trusted you." From this point on, he actually acts as defender of Basch to Ashe, who initially hates him.

As seems to be the case with most lead Final Fantasy Characters, Vaan always manages to ask the awkward questions that everyone is thinking, yet dare speak up about. This provides some great entertainment, but sometimes causes frustration and embarrassment among his party members.

His best friend is Penelo, though there are times in the beginning of the game when she seems to indicate a longing for more. Unfortunately, Vaan is too pre-occupied to notice.

SPOILER:
As the game comes to an end, Vaan finally achieves his dream of becoming a Sky Pirate, and even gets his own Airship. Penelo acts as his navigator/partner.
