Born in the Republic of Landis with his twin brother, Noah, Basch fled to Dalmasca and joined its militant forces shortly after the conquering of his homeland at the hands of the Archadian Empire. At Nalbina Fortress, Basch led the defense against Archadia and, when in a turn for the worst Prince Rasler was critically wounded, he loyally carried him from the battlefield. When Archadia took over, he and Vossler led an assault on Nalbina Fortress to save King Raminas only to be captured by Imperial forces. As part of Vayne's plot to frame Basch, he had Noah—more commonly known in-game as Gabranth—pose as Basch and assassinate the king.

As a result of being framed for the king's murder, Basch is now regarded by the Dalmascans as a traitor, and was declared executed by Marquis Halim Ondore IV immediately following the king's death. This is a fallacy, however, as Basch was actually imprisoned in the Nalbina Dungeons by Vayne as a means of ensuring Ondore's loyalty to the Empire. If Ondore betrays the Empire, all Vayne has to do is announce Basch's continued survival to destroy his credibility to his people.

Eventually freed by your party through pure coincidence, everyone is initially suspicious of Basch and his past actions—especially Vaan. Basch later explains the situation and that he was framed by Vayne and his twin, and because the party was able to catch a look at Gabranth's face in earlier events, it lends credibility to his explanation.

After the escape, Basch vows to protect Ashe and help the resistance, in spite of his past failures.

It was Basch's devotion to honor, despite everything that happened to them and their homeland, that most puzzled his twin, Gabranth/Noah, and was the source of division between the two of them. Eventually coming to respect Basch's views even more than his own, Gabranth makes a final attempt to redeem himself by remaining true to Larsa and helping in one of the party's final battles against Vayne. After the battle, as Gabranth/Noah is dying, he asks his brother/Basch to protect Larsa in his place and help ensure peace throughout Ivalice. In the end, Basch obliges his brother's wishes by cutting his hair and assuming Gabranth's identity, standing beside the new Emperor Larsa Solidor.
