A Sky Pirate who pilots the Strahl around the skies of Ivalice, Balthier and his partner, Fran, prefer to remain neutral in the ongoing war between the kingdoms of Ivalice. However, as the game begins and an attempted theft goes bad, the ensuing events force them to join the resistance against the Empire.

Throughout the game, Balthier often claims to be the "leading man" of the Story and acts as if this status makes him invincible, because "the 'leading man' never dies." This kind of attitude is all too common for him. He is bright, witty and playful, and is a great deal of fun to watch as you travel Ivalice.

Born Ffamran Demen Bunansa, Balthier is the son of Dr. Cid. Though Cid made him an Imperial Judge, Balthier soon grew weary of his father's insane obsession with Nethicite and decided to cut ties with his past by leaving and becoming a sky pirate under a new name.
